Nike Air Max Day - 'Max Talk' With Michelle

On Air Max Day 2022 we had the opportunity to interact with a handful of our community members and chop it up regarding anything and everything Air Max. Welcome to 'Max Talk' where our community members share some of their personal experiences with the Swoosh, more specifically the Air Max line and how they came to fall in love with the culture. It's no surprise the sport giant has been pushing the envelope with sustainable practices in efforts to build towards a more circular economy - prime example with their 'Move to Zero' journey crafting a variety of products from recycled materials. Meanwhile Nike pledges to converting to 100% renewable energy sources by 2025, let's tap in with Michelle to learn about her Air Max journey and what she wishes to see in the future from Nike regarding eco-conscious designs and directions.
What do you currently do for a living, and what are some of your hobbies?
"I currently work at Nomad Toronto and am also a student pursuing a BA degree in Toronto."
What was your most memorable experience regarding a pair of Air Max (if possible, an experience tied to your hobby/profession)?
"My most memorable experience regarding a pair of Air Max was the Comme des Garçons x Nike Air Max 95. I was intrigued by the deconstructed fabric, as well as their playful take on the silhouette which deviated from the usual model. It’s always exciting to see CdG’s play on Nike models through material exploration, taking designer initiatives, and offering a more contemporary take on footwear."
What is your grail Air Max?
"Probably the Nike Air Max 1 '112 Pack', one of DJ Clark Kent’s designs. It's a reflection of the relationship between music and sneakers. In the sense that sneakers contribute greatly to style/fashion, whilst musicians and artists can define or influence trends within the realm of fashion."
With this year being the 35th anniversary of the Tinker Hatfield-designed Air Max 1, What are your thoughts on this years AM1 “Blueprint” with details such as architectural design elements that are incorporated into the uppers?
"Nike has always done an excellent job of highlighting their designers and influences. The blueprint pays great homage to Hatfield’s legacy and pedigree. The Air Max 1 model merges Hatfield’s architectural background with his position at Nike during that time, the shoe took influence from the exposed structural elements of the Centre Pompidou in Paris."
What eco-conscious designs and directions do you hope to see from Nike's Air Max line in the future?
"The Nike Air Max Pre-Day uses at least 20% recycled material and soles are often regrind materials, the packaging also contains very little packaging material. It would be interesting to see Nike’s Air Max line utilize existing eco-conscious design elements and incorporate it to more models. Potentially popularizing such practice."
