Capsule x Nike Air Max Day Installation
A multitude of styles and designs have traversed the cityscapes of the world, but there is nothing like the extensive legacy of Nike’s Air Max. With the debut of the Air Max 1 in 1987, athletes and footwear enthusiasts caught a glimpse of the visible Air cushioning for the very first time. Nike is no stranger to innovation as we’ve witnessed the evolution of Air technology throughout years with the Air Max 90, Air Max 93, Air Max 95, Air Max 97, Air Max 98 and onward. Thirty plus years into the future, we’ve reached new heights of innovation with the debut of the Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit in 2017 and now, bigger bounce with the brand new Air Max 270. The Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit 2 also makes it’s debut with structural upgrades and aesthetic changes to the original design.
For the Air Max legacy, Nike’s design inspiration is often an eclectic one ranging from architecture to everyday objects and so on. Originally, the Air Max 270’s external Air cushioning unit was first modelled after a milk bottle jug handle to form the shape of the air bag. To up the ante, the Air unit was designed to extend 32 mm high, making this the tallest Air cushioning unit to date. It’s a design choice that compliments both form and function, giving the Air Max 270 superb responsiveness at the heel while complimenting the new age technical look.
Capsule and Nike are here to celebrate the most recent additions to the Air Max family tree: the Air VaporMax Flyknit 2 and the Air Max 270. It’s a runner revolution that never ceases to amaze and capture our imaginations. Our installation showcases these footwear designs and what it took to reach this point.
